OUR STORY

Two histories. One shared mission for Wichita.

Founded in 1995 and 2001, StepStone and Dear Neighbor Ministries were born from a shared conviction held by Wichita’s communities of women religious: that presence, compassion, and a faithful response to unmet needs can transform lives.

TIMELINE

Our Shared History

1995

StepStone is Founded

Originally called “New Hope,” StepStone was created by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ and the Sisters of St. Joseph to address a critical gap for survivors of domestic violence—providing safe, transitional housing paired with dedicated advocacy, support, and time to heal.

2001

Dear Neighbor Ministries is Founded

Founded by the the Sisters of St. Joseph, this initiative began in Wichita’s Hilltop neighborhood. What started as basic relationship-building and local meal delivery quickly grew into a trusted community outreach hub.

2005

StepStone and Dear Neighbor Ministries combined under the Congregation of St. Joseph to share administrative services and housing resources. This marked the beginning of the organizations working side-by-side.

2016

Bluffview Place Is Built

This 28-unit gated apartment complex marked a new era of support for survivors of domestic violence in Wichita by allowing survivors to access on-site support services.

2025

Formal Merger

In 2025, StepStone and Dear Neighbor Ministries formally merged, bringing their programs, people, and resources together as one organization.

Today

Under the name StepStone, we’ve united our shared history and purpose. We carry our commitment forward—honoring the dignity of every person, responding with compassion, and helping our neighbors find a clear path forward.
